Agni Dev is the deity of the Vedic fire element, revered as the sacred flame, carrier of offerings, purifier, and witness of vows.

Story of Agni Dev Ji

Agni Dev is regarded as one of the most ancient and important deities in Hinduism. He is the god of fire, the sacred flame, and is considered the messenger between gods and humans. Agni Dev holds a special place in the Vedas, and even the first hymn of the Rigveda is dedicated to him. Agni is not merely a symbol of fire, but also represents energy, purity, power, knowledge, and yajna (sacred sacrifice).
In ancient times, sages and deities performed yajnas. It was believed that the offerings made into the sacred fire were carried by Agni Dev to the gods. Because of this, he was called the “mouth of the gods.” Whenever a havan or yajna is performed, Agni Dev is invoked first.
According to a famous legend, there was once a fierce war between the gods and the demons. The demons had become extremely powerful and were defeating the gods. The gods sought help from Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. Then all the gods decided to perform a great yajna to obtain divine power.
The yajna began, and Agni Dev manifested. His radiant flames illuminated the entire atmosphere. The gods offered oblations with devotion and sacred chants. Agni Dev accepted those offerings and carried divine energy to the gods. Empowered by that energy, the courage of the gods increased, and eventually they achieved victory over the demons.
