The Story of Garuda Dev

Garuda Dev is revered in Hinduism as the King of Birds, the divine vehicle of Lord Vishnu, the enemy of serpents, and the deity symbolizing courage, speed, devotion, and freedom. He is considered the sovereign of all birds and is described as possessing a radiant and majestic form. Devotees regard him as the devoted servant of Lord Vishnu, the guardian of divine nectar (Amrita), and a symbol of righteousness and bravery throughout creation. It is believed that the mere sight or remembrance of Garuda removes fear of snakes and fills life with strength and enthusiasm.
Garuda occupies an important place in Vedic and Puranic literature. In the Rigveda, he is associated with the divine eagle (Shyena) who brings Soma and celestial nectar from heaven. Detailed accounts of his deeds are found in the Mahabharata and the Vishnu Purana. Throughout history, he has served as an inspiration for both gods and human beings.
The story of Garuda’s birth is both fascinating and inspiring. Sage Kashyapa had two wives—Vinata and Kadru. Kadru became the mother of the serpents, while Vinata became the mother of Garuda. Once, the two sisters argued about the color of the celestial horse Uchchaihshravas. Through deception, Kadru won the wager and Vinata was forced into servitude.
To free his mother from slavery, Garuda promised the serpents that he would obtain the nectar of immortality for them. This was an extraordinarily difficult task because the nectar was heavily guarded in the realm of the gods. However, through his immense strength and valor, Garuda defeated the celestial guardians and successfully obtained the nectar.
