The Story of Nandi Maharaj

Nandi Maharaj is revered in Hinduism as the supreme devotee of Lord Shiva, His gatekeeper, vehicle, and the chief of Shiva's attendants (Ganas). He is the guardian of the gates of Shiva's divine abode and is regarded as one of Lord Shiva's most beloved servants. Devotees worship him as an ideal symbol of strength, righteousness, devotion, and selfless service. In every Shiva temple, Nandi's idol is placed facing Lord Shiva, symbolizing that a true devotee always keeps their gaze fixed upon their chosen deity.
Nandi Maharaj holds a highly significant place in Hindu scriptures. Detailed accounts of him are found in the Shiva Purana, Skanda Purana, and Linga Purana. He is not merely a vehicle of Lord Shiva but also His devoted friend, servant, and gatekeeper. He is considered the leader of Shiva's celestial attendants.
The story of Nandi's birth is deeply sacred. Sage Shilada performed intense penance to obtain a child. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Shiva granted him a boon. A divine child emerged from the earth, whom Sage Shilada named Nandi. The child was extraordinarily radiant and devoted to Lord Shiva from an early age.
One day, several sages visited Shilada's hermitage and foretold that young Nandi Maharaj would have a short lifespan. Hearing this, Sage Shilada became deeply distressed. However, Nandi Maharaj remained steadfast and began intense penance dedicated to Lord Shiva. Pleased by his unwavering devotion and austerities, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati appeared before him.
