Narmada Mata, lovingly called Reva by devotees, is worshipped as a sacred river-mother associated with purification, devotion to Lord Shiva, and steadfast spiritual practice.
The Story of Narmada Mata
Narmada Mata, also known as Reva, Shankar-Kanya (Daughter of Shiva), Narmada Maiya, and the Bestower of Liberation, is regarded as one of the holiest river goddesses in Hinduism. She is believed to be a divine river manifested through the grace of Lord Shiva and is worshipped as the Mother who destroys sins, grants liberation, and works for the welfare of all living beings. Among the seven sacred rivers of India, Narmada Mata holds a special place.
According to the Puranas, Lord Shiva was once deeply absorbed in intense meditation on Mount Amarkantak. His penance was so powerful that all the gods and sages were awestruck by his spiritual radiance. After many years of austerity, divine drops of perspiration fell from Shiva's body onto the earth. From those sacred drops emerged a radiant maiden who later became known as Narmada Mata.
When the gods beheld this divine maiden, they were deeply impressed by her brilliance, beauty, and purity. Lord Shiva blessed her and declared that in the age of Kali she would uplift millions of souls and that merely beholding her would grant great spiritual merit.
According to another legend, Narmada Mata performed severe austerities to please Lord Shiva. Pleased with her devotion, Shiva granted her a special status among all sacred rivers, including the Ganga. He further blessed her by declaring that merely seeing the Narmada would bestow the same merit that bathing in other sacred rivers provides.
